Emergency Questions
Who’s the most surprising famous person you’ve been in a lift with? And which I mean, you can’t have gotten into the lift with them; they had to be in the lift you were in.
I was in Dublin airport in the hospitality lounge where they used to give free wine out. They don’t do that anymore. But Jonathan Miller was in the hospitality lounge. Wow, Jonathan Miller. Wow. So, I must introduce myself. So he left. He left. I didn’t see him in the lounge. He left with all the hundreds of books. You know, all his medical books and all the books he wrote. You know, classic Jonathan Miller. But when we arrived in Heathrow I’d go up and introduce myself to him because Pauline [McLynn] was in a play he directed. So I was in the lift alone with Jonathan Miller. And I, you know, I said, “Hope you don’t mind, but big fan of yours. I think you know – ” Blank. He didn’t react at all. “‘Scuse me. I know someone who I think you directed in a play.” Still blank. “Pauline McLynn?” Absolute complete blank still. And then I made the terrible mistake. I said, “‘Cause she’s in a show called Father Ted and I’m one of the writers.” And then the doors opened to the lift and he said, “I’m sorry, I don’t watch television.” And then just kind of waltzed off.
If you could take one item from any museum or art gallery – and you’re allowed to take it home with you – in the world, what would you take?
Well, actually, I do – I do a bit of painting and I was in doing a course in the RHA, which is the Royal Hibernian Academy, which is like the equivalent of the Royal Academy in London. I was doing a course early in the year. And there were some brilliant tutors and there was a painter called Colin Martin who did a wonderful painting of the interior of a space station. But I won’t have that; I’ll have the Mona Lisa instead. Because I could probably, you know – What would you get for the Mona Lisa on eBay? At least £1000.
Is there a TV theme tune that haunts you?
Well, I’ve been watching – do you know Talking Pictures TV? Do you know that channel? Aw, it’s so great. But they have, um, just loads of programs I remember when I was a kid and there was one called Budgie. Do you remember, with Adam Faith? Yeah […] and the theme tune to the first series of that is just… Yeah. It’s kind of haunting and evocative. That’s 1971/72, that was on. I was terrified. Do you remember the Singing Ringing Tree? I was terrified by that. In fact, I didn’t even watch it because I was so terrified by that.
